What Time Are Canvas Assignments Due?

The short answer: 11:59 PM on the due date, in the course's timezone. That's the near-universal convention professors use, because it's the last minute of the calendar day. But "usually 11:59" hides four traps that make technically-finished work count as late — and each one burns a wave of students every single semester.

Trap 1: The upload finishes after you clicked submit

Canvas timestamps your submission when the upload completes, not when you pressed the button. A 3 MB essay is instant; a 300 MB video presentation on dorm Wi-Fi is not. Students genuinely click Submit at 11:57 and get flagged late at 12:01.

Trap 2: The course timezone isn't your timezone

Due dates run on the course's timezone — the school's, effectively. On campus, that's invisible. Online, taking summer classes from another state, studying abroad? An 11:59 PM Eastern deadline is 8:59 PM in California and 6:59 AM in Berlin.

Canvas can display dates in your local timezone (Account → Settings → Time Zone), and when it differs from the course it shows both — read carefully which one is which.

Trap 3: "Due" and "available until" are different clocks

Every assignment can carry two times:

Due — the on-time deadline. After it, submissions are stamped Late in red (and possibly auto-penalized), but you can usually still submit.
Available until — the hard wall. When it passes, the submit button is simply gone.

The vicious configuration is both set to the same minute: miss 11:59 and there's no late submission, no mercy window, nothing. You'll find the times listed at the top of every assignment page — read both, every time.

Trap 4: Quizzes don't care about your remaining questions

Timed Canvas quizzes auto-submit when either the timer ends or the availability window closes — whichever comes first. Start a 60-minute quiz at 11:20 with an 11:59 close, and you get 39 minutes, not 60. Canvas warns about this in small text nobody reads at 11:19.

Exams also break the 11:59 convention constantly — professors love 9:00 PM or "end of class time" closes. The convention is a default, not a promise.

Knowing the time ≠ remembering the time
