How to Submit an Assignment on Canvas (Without the 11:59 PM Panic)

The short answer: open the course → Assignments → click the assignment → Start Assignment → attach your file or write your text → Submit Assignment. When it works, Canvas shows a timestamp and a confirmation. That's the whole happy path — it takes under a minute.

The rest of this guide is for the unhappy paths: missing submit buttons, rejected file types, resubmissions, group assignments, and the upload that hangs while the deadline ticks past. Which — trust us, we run a deadline-rescue service — is exactly when students actually search for this.

The standard submission, step by step

1. Open the right course from your Dashboard.
2. Click Assignments in the course navigation (if it's hidden, use Modules or the Syllabus — the assignment links from there too).
3. Click the assignment name to open it. Read the top block: it tells you the due date, the submission type, and any allowed file types.
4. Click Start Assignment (top right).
5. Depending on the submission type you'll see tabs for:
   • File Upload — click Choose File, pick your document, wait for it to attach.
   • Text Entry — type or paste directly into the editor.
   • Website URL — paste a link (Google Docs users: set sharing to "anyone with the link can view" first).
   • Media — record or upload audio/video.
6. Tick the academic-integrity/authorship box if your school shows one.
7. Click Submit Assignment.
8. Confirm it landed. You should see "Submitted!" with a date and time, and a green check on the assignment. No timestamp = not submitted. Screenshot it if the assignment matters.

In the Canvas Student app

The app flow mirrors the browser: course → Assignments → assignment → Submit Assignment → pick Files, Library, or Camera → Submit. Two app-specific warnings:

• Uploads over cellular are slower and flakier than Wi-Fi. For anything bigger than a photo, use Wi-Fi or the browser.
• If the app version acts weird (some external tools don't render in-app), open the assignment in a mobile browser instead — everything that works on desktop works there.

"There's no submit button" — the four causes

1. It's not an online submission. The "Submitting" field says on paper or external tool. You submit in class or inside the linked tool (Turnitin, McGraw-Hill, etc.), not on the Canvas page.
2. The availability window is closed. Assignments can have an "Available until" date separate from the due date. Once it passes, the submit button disappears entirely — your only move is emailing the professor.
3. The window hasn't opened yet. "Available on" is in the future. Come back later.
4. You're previewing through the Syllabus or Grades page. Click through to the actual assignment page.

File type rejected? Do this

If Canvas says the file type isn't allowed, the instructor restricted extensions (commonly .pdf or .docx only). Export your work to the required format — in Google Docs: File → Download → PDF; in Word: Save As → PDF. Renaming the extension does not convert the file and graders can tell.

Resubmitting

If resubmissions are allowed, a New Attempt button appears on the assignment after your first submission. Canvas keeps all attempts with timestamps; most instructors grade the newest. If you submitted the wrong file and there's no New Attempt button, email the instructor immediately — before the deadline if you can. A wrong-file email sent at 11:40 PM reads very differently than one sent three days later.

The part nobody plans for: remembering to submit at all
