How to Use Canvas on Your Phone: Setup, Notifications, and the One Thing the App Can't Do

The short answer: install the free Canvas Student app, tap Find my school, log in with your school account, then immediately go to Profile → Notifications and turn on push for Due Date and Announcement. That's the 2-minute setup that most students never finish — and the reason half your class finds out about schedule changes a day late.

The notification settings worth changing

• Due Date — ON. Fires when instructors set or change due dates.
• Announcement — ON. Professors move exams and cancel classes here.
• Grading — your call. Instant grade drops are either motivating or anxiety fuel; know thyself.
• Discussion replies, comments, everything else — OFF unless a course genuinely runs on discussions. Notification fatigue is why students mute the app entirely.

Then the layer everyone forgets: your phone's own settings. iOS: Settings → Notifications → Canvas Student → Allow. Android: Settings → Apps → Canvas Student → Notifications. And check your Focus/Do Not Disturb schedule — a perfectly configured app that's silenced from 10 PM to 8 AM misses exactly the window when assignments are due.

What the app is genuinely good at
